A local Yachats man was arrested for drunk driving Tuesday night in Yachats as the van he was driving left Yachats Ocean Road, smashed through some large river boulders and was headed for a 30′ drop off down to a rather angry ocean. But a few more of those large river boulders stopped the van just before it went over the side. The man driving the van got out and was arrested by a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy for drunk driving. He was transported to the Lincoln County Jail in Newport. Reports say there were two other young people in the van with him.
Fire officials at the scene reported that this stretch of Yachats Ocean Road, south of Shell Street, is a bad one. They say a number of drivers have left the road on the curve. If you go all the way over, you head straight down to a blow-hole type inlet from the sea. Anyone getting stuck upside down in it would be very difficult to rescue.
