A decision has been made, and it’s the one that everyone was afraid of; No fireworks this “3rd” of July in Depoe Bay. A very long patriotic expression of fireworks at the home of the World’s Smallest Harbor will skip a year due to a flurry of information about its impacts on protected migratory sea birds, and confusion on how to quickly come up with an alternative site that would work for the launching and viewing of the rockets red glare.
Depoe Bay Chamber of Commerce Manager Carol Barkhurst said everyone is disappointed, but there just wasn’t enough time to figure out a complicated set of requirements and logistics to find a new spot that would make everything work. “But, we haven’t given up on finding a way to come together as a community and find some out ways to celebrate our country’s birth” Barkhurst said. “We’re inviting suggestions from the community and so far they include a barbecue in the park, a sidewalk sale and community raffle among others. But she emphasized that Depoe Bay now has a full year to plan a clear way forward to re-start the town’s 3rd of July Fireworks. She said she’s confident they’ll find a location that won’t run afoul of the Pacific Migratory Flyway Treaty.
