State Parks officials say they will announce Tuesday the fate of the Japanese Dock that washed ashore at Agate Beach, just north of Newport. The 66 foot, 132 ton fish transfer dock was traced to a coastal community of Misawa, Japan that lost four of these large portable docks. One was washed ashore in Japan along with the one on our coast. That leaves two of them unaccounted for. Fishermen say if they’re out there in the open sea, they are a horrible threat to shipping because they’re not lit and you won’t know they’re out there unless you hit them, which, they say, would be fatal for most fishing boats.
Newport Mayor Mark McConnell said he’s received word that a Portland company is proposing to tow it to Portland where it would be transformed into a memorial shrine to the memory of the thousands of Japanese who lost their lives to the earthquake and the tsunami that followed soonafter.
