Looking for lifeguards for the Toledo Municipal Pool

The Toledo Swimming Pool will be hosting an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Class taking place in late June.

The class is Approximately 24 Hours in length and will cover topics including: Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR and AED use as well as OHSA recognized bloodborne pathogens training. Participants who complete all requirements will receive certifications in all the areas listed that are valid for 2 years.

Days and times for class sessions:

Thursday June 21, 2012 5:30p-9:00p
Friday June 22,2012 5:30p-9:00p
Saturday June 23, 2012 8:00a-7:00p (With a lunch break)
Sunday June 24, 2012 8:00a-7:00p (With a lunch break)

The pool currently has openings for several part-time lifeguards. While participation and completion of this class does not guarantee employment with the City of Toledo, the certification offered is the main prerequisite to be considered for employment. To be considered for Lifeguard positions with the City of Toledo, applicants must successfully complete a criminal background check, a pre-employment drug screening and be approved by City Management.

People who are interested in seeing if they qualify are encouraged to come to the pool Monday’s and Wednesday’s until the class starts to Open House sessions from 5:30p-6:30p. These sessions will allow the opportunity to attempt the pre-requisite skills, to learn more about the class and becoming a lifeguard. There is no charge for the open house sessions.

Prerequisites for the class:
Must be 15 years old on or before June 24, 2012.
Must be able to Tread Water for 2 Minutes without using hands.
Must be able to swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl, breastroke or a combination of the two strokes.
Must be able to complete a timed event of swimming 20 yards, retrieving a 10 pound object, and returning to the starting. point with both hands on the object, at the surface, then exiting the pool without a ladder or steps.

Lifeguarding is a job that is not just for teenagers but also typically can be filled by retirees, stay-at-home parents, professionals from other fields looking for additional work or anyone who is able to pass the certification and employment requirements. Course Fee: $50.00 includes Certification Fees and a CPR Pocket Mask
There must be at least 4 applications to run the course.
