HAS ANYONE SEEN THEM? ~ They have not been heard from since Sunday (6/3). Last known location was a pay phone at a junction in Troutdale, OR heading for Corvallis/Newport via Hwy. 18. They were hitchhiking. His Newport ETA was Tuesday (6/5). Please get in touch if you see them at 541-270-0467.
This homeless man and his service dog spent several months here in Newport (Nov-May) and I met him at church. My husband and I befriended him in January and we became very good friends with him. He stayed at our house a few times when weather was really bad and he visited regularly.
He migrated to Corvallis in May to work to get his ID, job, etc., get back into life but left a waterproof packet of his belongings with us for safekeeping. He said it was nice to have someplace to put it as he always worried it would get lost. It has a picture of his mom, his birth certificate and a couple of other small momentos. It’s all he has in the world. He would not leave it behind.
He called us from a pay phone in Troutdale on 6/3 and said he was looking at the Hwy. 18 sign and would see us tomorrow (6/4) or Tuesday (6/5) at the latest. We think he would have gone through Corvallis to get to Newport because he picked up mail at Community Outreach Inc. in Corvallis. (We mail him money every week to pay for Beanie’s dog food.) Due to the privacy act, they can’t tell me at COI if there are envelopes there or not.
Also, Rich isn’t your typical homeless person. He doesn’t do drugs, alcohol, etc. He wouldn’t just wander away. Beanie won first prize at BowWowMeow on Bay street. The lady there thinks a lot of them too. He was pretty well known.
I contacted authorities today and they said “it is not unusual for homeless people to not show up someplace they say they’re going. They are homeless!” ….and said “it didn’t warrant a missing person’s report.” I’m just trying to get their picture out there for people to see it. A homeless man and a SERVICE DOG are kind of unique. Can you help me? Do you have any suggestions?
