Newport: Mike Bowers and his Savory Cafe provide free pizza to school kids embarking on their summer vacation!!
Newport Intermediate and High Schools got an end of the school year “street party” thrown for them this week. To the rhythmic sounds of rock and roll, as well as smooth jazz from high school musicians, hundreds of students feasted on their favorite food. Pizza! There was also salad, a cold drink and some other goodies offered in line. In the last photo, we see local author and teacher Matt Love bulking up on vegan brain food no doubt to keep his fingers moving on the “keyboard of life” as he clicks out another in a long line of engaging and thought provoking books.
The entire street bash was partially sponsored and food provided by Savory Cafe of Nye Beach. Cafe owner Mike Bowers told News Lincoln County that his restaurant provided around 120 pizzas and the local Pepsi office provided a seemingly endless supply of soft drinks. And both went fast.
As on any spring day, the pre-graduating class of 2012 began to crave more pizza and something to drink. Bowers said they never ran out. “And that is the way they want to keep it for next year’s seniors as well.”
Bowers said that Newport has been very good to him and his wife Nancy through their business and for that generosity he puts on the big free pizza feed every year as a way of giving back and expressing gratitude to the community. Bowers said that he employs a number of Newport High School students at his Savory Cafe, some of whom were actually staffing the serving line at the event. He said he is losing some of them as they move on to college and other life pursuits. “It’s a sad but sweet farewell. But of course there other great young people coming up right behind them who will benefit from real-world employment experience in a quality work environment,” Bowers said.
IN ADDITION! Local professional “radio pronouncer” Michael Blakeley was on hand with his Driftworks Production “Sky Cam” giving us an overhead view of the event. It’s a fun video! But FIRST! Fasten your seat belt!
