A call out to Lincoln County citizens to express their feelings about “Corporate Personhood” and “Money as free speech”
Story written and provided by Stephen Farish
On Wednesday, June 13th at 9:30 AM in the County Courthouse, members of Occupy Newport and various local citizens will ask the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners to support a nationwide, grass roots movement that is attempting to reverse the doctrine of ‘Corporate Personhood’.
The US Supreme Court has ruled that the spending of money is equivalent to protected free speech and that corporations, unions and other artificial entities are entitled to Constitutional rights and privileges originally intended only for human beings.
The most egregious effect of this ruling has been the pouring of enormous amounts of money, anonymously, into election campaigns. We believe our election system and our national Democracy has been hijacked by corporate and business interests.
We …join with activists and organizations from coast to coast in seeking an Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which would negate this judicially imposed doctrine and ‘level the playing field’ for candidates and issues which are not necessarily subservient to corporate interests.
We believe that the decisions made by our local, state, and federal legislatures should be made, first and foremost, for the benefit and protection of human beings and the environment rather than the voracious and never ending appitites of business.
A petition is currently being circulated for this effort. You can sign or receive your own copy at the Commissioners meeting mentioned above, at Oceana Food Coop, Café Mundo or by calling 541-563-6210.
We urge you to attend this meeting and show your support.
