Newport police officers Keith Garrett and Tom Simpson were each given awards by Police Chief Mark Miranda Monday evening. Garrett was presented with a ceremonial pin that he earned by taking enormous risk to his own life as he freed the driver of a pickup that had been wedged, after an accident, between a semi and the rail of the Yaquina Bay Bridge, all during a rain and wind storm that saw gusts to 85 mph.
Sergeant Tom Simpson was next, the long time NPD veteran was praised for his quick action that saved the life of a young man who had been assaulted and was bleeding badly. Sergeant Simpson rushed to the scene and found the patient groggy, unable to speak. His neck was bleeding profusely. Instead of waiting for an ambulance to arrive on scene, Simpson managed to get pressure on the wound and temporarily stopped the bleeding. Ambulance and PCH medical said had Simpson not done that, the outcome could have turned out very different.
