From “Historic Seaport”
Cannon fire from the tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain will rock Yaquina Bay during the vessels’ visit to Newport in May. But the action will be all in fun as the ships conduct mock sea battles for guests during their stay. The ships are scheduled to arrive at the Port of Newport, 600 Southeast Bay Boulevard in Newport, on May 15. They will open for walk-on tours, sailing excursions, and educational programs for K-12 students. Here’s the ships’ schedule:

The highlight of the visit is a series of three-hour Battle Sails, which feature a recreation of a typical naval skirmish between Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain. The ships will fire real cannon loaded with real gunpowder, but not cannon balls. Guests may verbally taunt their adversaries and a winner of the battle will be declared. Tickets are $60 adults, $50 students/seniors/active military, $40 children 12 and under.
Adventure Sails are a three-hour family-oriented experience featuring a chance to help sail a real tall ship, including raising a sail and taking the helm. Guest can also sing a sea shanty or just listen to maritime tales. Tickets are $35 each. Evening Sails are two-hour tall ship experiences similar to Adventure Sails, but with a beautiful Pacific Ocean sunset. Tickets for Evening Sails are $25 each. To purchase tickets, call 800-200-5239 or visit www.historicalseaport.org.
Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain are also taking reservations for K-12 education programs. Home school and service groups are welcome to sign up for these one-hour or three-hour programs. Public schools designated Title I by the U.S. Department of Education may be eligible for significant discounts.
