A young Eugene man climbed the flagpole in front of the State Capitol Thursday morning and hung a protest banner that indicates opposition to the idea that timber sale proceeds should not be a major source for K-12 education. The sign he unfurled said “Schools vs Trees? We want both.”
Oregon State Police tried to talk Perry Graham down for nearly two hours. Finally, Graham lowered himself to the ground and into a set of handcuffs. A small number of Graham’s friends protested Graham’s arrest as he was led away and booked into the Marion County Jail on charges of Disorderly Conduct, Criminal Tresspass and Criminal Mischief.
Troopers say they are renting a lift platform that will allow the safe removal of Graham’s climbing gear and his sign.
