The former owner of the Circus World Pets Store on North 101 just off the north end of the Yaquina Bay Bridge, has been sentenced to five years probation, nearly a month of community service labor and that he not own or house any pets for five years. The Oregon Human Society says Joseph F. Wilson pled guilty to one county of first degree animal neglect and one county of second degree animal neglect.
When Humane Society Officers raided Wilson’s store last fall, they found animals living in deplorable conditions, amidst their own filth, excrement and urine. Officers confiscated 11 puppies, 31 birds, three chinchillas, 70 rats, four gerbils and more than 100 mice. 800 fish were also removed and placed in the care of the Oregon Coast Aquarium. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and the Oregon Zoo provided forster care for more than two dozen reptiles seized from Circus World Pets.
The Humane Society said that all the puppies, birds and other small animals taken from the store were placed in homes and that many of the reptiles are now part of OMSI’s educational program, while other rescued reptiles remain under veterinary care at the Oregon Zoo.
