Newport Police say an intoxicated driver rolled his 4×4 pickup at 101 and Neff Streets early Sunday morning, damaging a motel entryway and a considerable amount of landscaping.
Officers say they observed Levi Gaze, 24, of Waldport, headed southbound on 101 in Newport at around 2:30am. When they clocked him at 45 mph in a 25 mph zone, they activated their overhead lights and went after him. At that point, they say, Gaze’s pickup left the roadway at Neff, jumped the sidewalk, took out a street light, went into a roll, wiped out landscaping and after another roll damaged the City Center Motel’s driveway entry drive-through. Realizing his vehicle was upright, officers say Gaze tried to accelerate away from the area but finally stopped in the parking lot.
Arriving fire rescue and medical personnel determined that Gaze was not injured. Noting his intoxication, officers cuffed Gaze for a short ride to the Lincoln County Jail where he was booked for drunk driving, reckless driving and three counts of malicious mischief. His bail was set at $145,000.
