Yaquina Head Lighthouse Volunteer: “The BLM is jeopardizing the lighthouse’s historic places listing!”
After a recent toxic clean up around the base of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse (after an exterior paint job on the lighthouse), reports say a well meaning BLM botanist figured it would be a good idea to revegetate the area that was stripped of its vegetation in the clean up. However, once that project was launched, a lighthouse volunteer, who is a stickler for keeping things the way they are in order to strictly comply with the lighthouse’s status as a nationally registered historical site, objected strongly to what the botanist was doing. And he told Oregonian reporter Lori Tobias that if the site doesn’t stay stripped he’s going to take the issue up the chain of command within the BLM as well as to the folks in charge of the National Historical Registry.
The story is in the Oregonian, a story which many might well consider nothing more than a “tempest in a lighthouse.” Click here.
