In appreciation for all their efforts to save the building, Umpqua Bank has donated $2,500 to the Newport Firefighters Association. The fire last week destroyed the building but was stopped short of damaging any other. Fire officials determined the cause to have been an electrical malfunction above the ATM room just east of the bank’s main entry. Investigators determined the fire had smoldered much of the night before. Upon opening the bank in the morning, the fire was drafted and fanned by high winds which quickly caused the fire to spread and took down the building very quickly.
Umpqua Bank has opened a temporary facility on NW 11th, just west of HIghway 101 in Newport. Umpqua officials predict it’ll take about a year to plan and build a new bank at their site at 1250 North Coast Highway. They’re keeping the same hours as before in what used to be the home of one of Newport’s credit unions.
