Normal marine traffic has been restored to the Yaquina Bay Bar after a Coast Guard search team could find no sign of the Fishing Vessel Chevelle on the bottom of the channel. The Chevelle was entering the bar last week when a swell caught it from behind that caused the vessel’s 400+ crab pots to shift. The Chevelle immediately listed hard left and with a fierce southerly wind blowing, it rammed up against the north jetty where it gradually broke up and went to the bottom.
The Coast Guard closed the bar due to the hazard. But after sonar investigation over the past 24 hours, the Coast Guard couldn’t find any sign of the Chevelle. So the Coast Guard reopened to bar to marine traffic.
Fishermen watching the Chevelle break up on the rocks speculated last week that if it went down in pieces, they all would all be sucked back out to sea on the currents of a low tide.
