Neighbors on Southeast First Street in Newport Saturday afternoon looked up at a house on the hill to see smoke pouring up the backside, the smoke rising into the trees. They called 9-1-1 to report that the house appeared to be on fire, but that they weren’t completely sure. Some suspected it might be an unattended warming fire that transients up the hill, off Highway 20, build on occasion.
Arriving firefighters pulled into the driveway but found no one home. They quickly got a hose around to the back and there they found the fire. But it wasn’t the house or a transient fire that was burning. It was a brush pile fire that the homeowners had failed to fully extinguish before they left.
The fire department will likely have a little talk with them.
