A Salem area man has been sentenced to prison for the death of a Toledo volunteer firefighter in August of 2009, when two cars hit head-on east of Eddyville.
Edward R. Johnston was sentenced to 75 months in state prison. Court records show that Johnston was driving on Highway 20 east of Eddyville when he went out to pass the car in front of him. Toledo Volunteer Fireman Joseph Ernst was coming the other way and the collision was horrendous as pictured above. Ernst was killed. Johnston was also convicted of Reckless Driving and Assault adding additional jail time.
Oregon courts are far from being done with Johnston. He is facing trial in Salem on charges of child pornography, sodomy and delivering methamphetamine to children as well as possession of cocaine. His trial is scheduled to begin June 5th.
