Info from Newport Fire Department
Newport Fire Department was called to the Big Creek Pointe Apartments on Crestview Drive for a reported structure fire at 12:33 today. The original call was for smoke pouring out of a lower floor apartment. Arriving units found moderate smoke venting from the apartment. Crews extinguished a kitchen fire and cleared the smoke out while evacuating the rest of the building. The cause of the fire was determined to be unattended food on the stove.
During the fire attack, a second structure fire was reported in the 200 block of NE Chambers Court. Newport Police arriving on scene were able to confirm smoke pouring from the home’s electrical meter box and that the surrounding area was starting to catch fire. Arriving firefighters found light smoke pouring from the attic vents, and after conducting a primary search, were able to extinguish the fire and ventilate the home. Units were engaged in salvage and overhaul for approximately an hour. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The Newport Fire Department would like to remind everyone to be especially aware of fire risks from alternate heat sources, electrical issues, and downed power lines during this period of strong and unpredictable winter weather.
