Jim Voetberg, Newport City Manager, announced that city emergency services are geared up to respond to the predicted severe winter storm.
He reported that most facilities will be operating, including the Recreation Center and the Library, as Lincoln County Schools will be closed. He added that the Newport Swimming Pool will be closed.
Voetberg stated that “although most city facilities are planned to be open regular hours; major power outages could force closures.” He added that “the potential exists that skeleton crews will be staffing many buildings during the storm, and suggested that residents planning to visit city facilities call first to ensure that they are open.”
Voetberg “urged residents to minimize travel during the duration of the storm, and recommended that every household have a “72-Hour Kit,” including water and food.” Residents are encouraged to conserve water, and noted that water is available at the City Shops, located at 845 NE Third Street.
Fire Chief, Phil Paige, recommended that “all residents register for the Everbridge emergency notification service.” Residents can register by clicking the link on the city website at www.newportoregon.gov.
Voetberg noted that “there is potential for any number of things to occur during a storm of this magnitude, but the city plans business as usual, and is prepared to handle emergencies as they arise.”
