News Release from Newport Police
Early Saturday morning Newport Police Officers responded to a reported burglary in progress on SE 2nd Street. Upon arrival Officers confronted William Houston, age 24 of Newport, as he was fleeing the victim’s yard. Houston ran down a steep embankment and into a heavily vegetated area.
Additional units responded to establish a containment perimeter around the area. The Newport Fire Department responded with night-vision goggles and a thermal imaging device which were used to locate Houston in the shrubbery. Houston initially refused to surrender until police officers closed in on his position. Once arrested, Houston continued to resist by attempting to slip out of his handcuffs.
Houston was transported to Lincoln County Jail where he was lodged on charges of Criminal Trespass, Resisting Arrest, and Disorderly Conduct. His bail set at $32,500.
