A stop-gap suggestion for the homeless
During their annual joint-session meeting with the Newport City Council, Lincoln County Commissioners, Commissioner Bill Hall in particular, suggested that the Newport City Council consider passing a new city ordinance that would allow the homeless to sleep in their private vehicles. Hall told the council that the cities of Eugene and Portland both allow the homeless to sleep in their vehicles rather than having to sleep outside in Oregon’s harsh winter environment. Hall said Newport Chief Miranda seemed receptive to the idea as was the council
Hall said the “seed” has been planted and called on Newport residents, especially advocates for the homeless, to express their support of the idea and to encourage the city council to pass such an ordinance. Hall said “I don’t see it as a perfect solution by any means, but for people with no other alternative, I think it’s better than being completely exposed to the elements.”
