CELTIC FESTIVAL CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers interested in helping at the 2012 Newport Celtic Festival & Highland Games are invited to attend an organizational meeting on Tuesday, January 24th from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at the Central Lincoln PUD, 2129 N. Coast Hwy. in Newport. No experience or kilt is necessary. Event organizers are seeking enthusiastic people who are interested in joining their all-volunteer team. Volunteers are needed in a variety of roles within a number of committees. The second annual festival returns to the Lincoln County Fairgrounds June 8-9-10.
The family and dog friendly event is a cultural celebration of the seven Celtic nations of Brittany, Cornwall, Galicia, Ireland, Isle of Man, Scotland and Wales. The inaugural 2011 event drew almost twice as many people as expected with an estimated 4,500 attendees. Over half of the 2011 patrons traveled from outside Lincoln County. Polls show the event is now a “not to be missed” stop on the NW Celtic Festival circuit for vendors, clans and fans. Organizers estimate an exponential increase in attendance this year.
The creators and principal organizers of the first event are back as an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. The organization was formed to foster awareness and education of Celtic culture on the Oregon Coast, to better manage the annual festival, to expand to year round events, and assure the authenticity of the Celtic culture presented to the community is preserved.
While nearly one in five Oregonians claim Celtic ancestry, many have lost touch with their roots. Part of the organization’s mission is to connect people with their heritage through music, dance, athletics and other activities. In its first year, the group has staged the Celtic Festival & Highland Games in June, held an Irish Céilí community dance for the Celtic New Year in October, is presenting a Robert Burns Supper on January 21 and planning another event for St. Patrick’s Day in March.
