A note to the Newport area community from Katherine Myers, Manager, Newport Food Pantry
A volunteer was helping me sort some food that came from one of our collection bins and she was astounded that we were receiving so much of exactly what we need to fill our shelves. I told her that it is a direct result of the generosity of the Newport community and Dave Morgan of News Lincoln County. We can’t thank all of you enough.
A special thank you to Karen Butler of H & R Block and Jamie Holzgraf, each of whom have given us a generous supply of reusable grocery bags to distribute. One of our goals is to reduce the number of single-use bags and these two people have helped us considerably.
On Tuesday alone we distributed 1,700 pounds of food to 85 people, 33 of whom were children living in food insecure households. That means peanut butter and canned meats/proteins are always in great demand. We are currently very low on canned fruits (pineapple especially), oatmeal, condiments, and varieties of soup. Bagged peas and beans such as red beans, black beans, and split peas are also needed. Our bins are in many locations around town including 24 hour service at the Newport Fire Department. For other locations, see the list by clicking here.
In a “shopping pantry,” variety and choice are indispensable components and you and your readers help make that possible. Thank you.
