Lauren Bobo-Shisler may only be 8 years old, but she’s racking up swimming trophies like some elk hunters rack up horns. Lauren recently received recognition from Oregon Swimming, Inc. for finishing the season with a top 5 time in the state for the 8 & under 50 LCM backstroke, a time she swam as a 7 year old. She’s ranked in the top 10 in the state this year for events in the backstroke, freestyle and butterfly.
Lauren’s parents, Julie and Scott were both young swimmers. Julie explains that “water” was baby Lauren’s first experience. During her underwater birth, the mid-wife turned away for a moment, and out came Lauren, swimming into the world!
Julie says Lauren began swim training with Susan Fox at the ripe old age of four, and has been happily competing ever since. Lauren’s goals for this year are to break a few Newport Seahorse Team records and to win 1st place at the State Meet in the 25 free-style, just like her mother did when she was 8. To accomplish these goals, Lauren swims 90 minutes, four days a week, at the Newport Pool under head coach Chris Lamma. She even swims some weekends to receive valuable coaching from her mentor and lifelong Coach Susan Fox.
Lauren and the other Newport Swim Team members have 4 meets over the next few months, culminating in the state championships this February in Springfield, OR.
