ODOT crews are assessing the wind damage along Highway 18 from Grand Ronde to Lincoln City. ODOT reports numerous tree falls and sitings of other trees about to go over in the heavy winds that are hammering the coast. Thus far ODOT has determined the area is too dangerous to work in. ODOT’s Public Information Officer Rick Little said crews went into an area where 15 or so trees had fallen. But as they set about to remove the trees, several more fell nearby. So they packed up and got out of there. ODOT is expected to make an announcement within the hour as to whether they expect OR 18 to be reopened today. Little says even if they got right back in and got the trees out, they’d be working in the dark around a lot of trees that could still fall on them so there is a good chance they’ll have to wait out the storm and tackle the tree removal tomorrow.
Alternate routes include Highways 22 out of Grand Ronde, or Highways 20 and 34 out of Corvallis/Philomath or 26 or 6 north toward Astoria.
