THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN PORTLAND HAS ISSUED A HIGH SURF ADVISORY…WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 4 PM PST FRIDAY. SEAS GENERATED BY A STRONG STORM IN THE NORTH PACIFIC WILL REACH THE SOUTH WASHINGTON AND NORTH OREGON COAST TODAY.

* SEAS: A WESTERLY SWELL OF 20 TO 22 FT WITH SWELL PERIOD OF 14 TO 16 SECONDS BUILDS INTO THE COASTAL WATERS TODAY. SEAS NEAR 15 FT THIS MORNING BUILD TO AROUND 20 TO 22 FT BY AFTERNOON. THE LONGER PERIOD SWELL…THAT IS THE HIGHEST ENERGY SWELL…BEGINS TO AFFECT THE SURF ZONE EARLY THIS EVENING. SWELL IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN HIGH THROUGH FRIDAY.

* IMPACTS: SWELL OF THIS MAGNITUDE CAN PRODUCE DEADLY SURF CONDITIONS. IT IS DANGEROUS TO VENTURE NEAR THE WATER UNDER HIGH SURF CONDITIONS. PEOPLE HAVE DROWNED AFTER BEING SWEPT FROM ROCKS AND JETTIES WHILE OBSERVING HIGH SURF. STAY AWAY FROM THE WATERS EDGE AND BE ALERT FOR THE EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH WAVE. NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON THE OCEAN!
