Information Provided by Newport Police Department
The Newport Police Department is alarmed by the increase of teenage victims of crime involving the internet and cell phones. In dedication to its mission to “make Newport a safe place to live, work, play, learn, and visit,” Newport Police has developed a page on our website that links teens to personal safety information exclusively for and by other teenagers. Many of the links and resources provided on Teen Safety Scene put teens in touch with peers who relate their own experiences in successfully dealing with such issues as textual harassment, ‘sexting’, cyberbullying, stalking, depression, suicide, and pressure to use drugs.
Many law enforcement agencies, including Newport Police, feature a Kids’ Page on their website, geared toward children under the age of 12. However, the Newport Police Department recognizes the scarcity of information addressing teen safety, having found fewer than six law enforcement websites nationwide with pages strictly for teenagers. As a result, Newport Police’s newest page, “Teen Safety Scene,” lists dozens of informative links in the electronic medium teens prefer, and from the resources they trust. Parents, educators, and friends of teenagers are encouraged to evaluate the page by going to www.newportpolice.net or by clicking here.
