Newport Police say a Utah man, driving a rental moving truck, towing a big trailer, pulled into the City Center Motel Tuesday night, hit the building and took out a beam and ceiling material of the awning. The motel manager and others reportedly yelled at the driver to stop, but instead Luke Knudson of Salt Lake City backed up, drove through the parking lot, over the grass and back onto to Highway 101 southbound.
Police say a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted the truck parked at another motel in South Beach. Officers approached Knudson and immediately determined he was impaired. However Knudson refused to take a field sobriety test. With that they put him in handcuffs, took him to the Lincoln County Jail and booked him for drunk driving, hit and run and criminal mischief. His bail was set at $80,000.
