Newport Volunteer Firefighters will be taking their 104′ aerial ladder truck to the Newport Safeway parking lot this Saturday as a huge symbol of their attempt to ‘HOSE DOWN HUNGER’ on behalf of the Newport Food Pantry. Firefighters are calling on the community to donate canned and other non-perishable foods to their food drive that will run from 10am-4pm this Saturday, November 5th. The food pantry was just recently created to help make food distribution to the needy more convenient in the Newport area. The food pantry’s Jim Myers says the USDA recently announced that federal food deliveries will be cut 40% very shortly which means the pantry will have to rely more on donated food and money for food.
Those who would like to become more involved in addressing Newport’s growing hunger challenges can contact them at 541-270-0842. You can also get more information on line at their website: www.NewportFoodPantry.org
Also please be reminded that the food pantry is holding a pantry dedication and open house Sunday afternoon, November 20th. It’ll be a good opportunity to see the new pantry, learn how it’s run and whether you’d like to become more involved as a person who enjoys making a real difference in the community.
One more thing – the food pantry’s big fundraiser is coming up November 26th and 27th at the Hallmark Resort on Elizabeth Street in Newport. It’s the Christmas Coffee Classic that features their guest star CHOCOLATE! It’s a great opportunity to get your coffee and chocolate stocking stuffers for your Christmas tree. Many coffees and chocolates from more than twenty vendors will be on hand – both local and from around Oregon! They’ll also be running a Coffee College which involves fun seminars and great information on coffee brewing and insights on how to pick great coffee beans! Sponsors are Cape Foulweather Coffee Company, Newport Bay Coffee and Umpqua Bank. “Buzz on down!”
