Former Newport Volunteer Firefighter Amanda Murphy has filed a civil rights lawsuit against fire department Captain Jim Salisberry and City Manager Jim Voetberg over the way she was treated when she reported her allegation that she was inappropriately touched by Salisberry during a firefighting training class on October 12, 2009. Murphy’s complaint further alleges that the matter was taken to City Manager Jim Voetberg where Murphy contends the matter was not properly handled. Murphy’s lawsuit cites the city for failure to properly train employees in terms of proper on-the-job behavior, especially with regard to sexual harrassment and first amendment issues and proper proceedures for handling workplace complaints.
Court records show Murphy filed her complaint in Federal District Court in Eugene. Her attorney is Charese Rohny, who specializes in workplace civil rights matters.
Murphy’s case has been set for next March in Eugene District Federal Court in Eugene.
