Six people were injured, one seriously, Friday morning in a two-vehicle traffic crash on Highway 18 east of Otis. Toopers report that a 1998 Volkswagen Cabrio driven by KENON A. EVERTS, age 19, from Troutdale, was westbound on Highway 18 near milepost 3. For an unknown reason, the Volkswagen traveled toward the shoulder, collided with a guardrail and then crossed into the eastbound lane where it was struck in the side by an eastbound 1999 Chrysler Concord with four occupants.
All six vehicle occupants were initially transported by Pac West Ambulance to North Lincoln Hospital. EVERTS was then flown by REACH air ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland with critical injuries. The other five vehicle occupants had non-life threatening injuries. The Volkswagen’s passenger is identified as THOMAS W. GATES, age 16, from Gresham.
The four occupants of the Chrysler are identified as driver NEAL T. MILLER, age 46, and passenger KANDICE M. BLOMDAHL, age 31. The other two passengers were an 8-year old boy and 2-year old girl. All are from Milwaukie.
EVERTS and GATES were using safety restraints. Safety restraint use by the Chrysler occupants is pending confirmation.
Highway 18 was closed in both directions for over 4 hours with a detour was in place.
OSP was assisted by Pac West Ambulance, North Lincoln Fire & Rescue, REACH, and ODOT.
