You can always count on at least a couple of things to greet you when you head for the coast. The roiling surf and usually enough breeze to keep a kite store full of kites aloft, swimming merrily either in sun or clouds. It matters not to those who never tire of seeing familiar earth-bound forms flying about as if the sky was their native habitat.
Here’s the rundown from Lincoln City’s tourism agency on the 33rd annual Kite Festival now going on in Lincoln City through today, Sunday the 9th!
Kite fliers from across the Northwest are gathered at the D-River Wayside on October 8 & 9 for the 33rd Annual Fall Kite Festival in Lincoln City. A celebration of both professional and leisure kite fliers with some of the most colorful big “show kites” in the world.
Connor Doran, contestant on America’s Got Talent 2010 will be the center of attention with his Rev quad-line kite. And Ronda Brewer, current America Kiteflier Association National Rokkaku (Rok) Battle champion, will delight you with a Rok battle demonstration. Northwest Team Suspended Animation along with Dave & Susan Gomberg, Phil & Barbara Burk and Rod & Cindy Thrall, will display the “big” stuff, while Jerimy Colbert will fly deltas. Amy Doran, Team iQuad with their REV (quad-line) kites and Penny Lingenfelter will also perform during the Festival.
The 2011 Kite Festival theme is “Rockin’ the Rokakku”. Scheduled activities will include kite workshop, kite making for kids, a kid’s parade, kids’ passports to kites, and a Rokakku mega fly and battle. The fun begins at 10AM and runs through 4PM both days in Lincoln City, where the flying is never finer.
