Big surf, big danger along the Oregon Coast
As you can see from these photos provided by News Ranger Joni in Newport, the surf is horrendous and quite dangerous. Even walking along the beach can be a hazard if you’re not careful. In areas where there are rock outcroppings or on local jetties, the danger is extreme. The National Weather Service is warning everyone to stay away from the surf; especially don’t swim in it because any rip currents it creates can push a swimmer out a mile from shore in less than five minutes with obvious consequences.
The National Weather Service says the high surf warning will continue through 5pm this evening for the Central Oregon Coast, but obviously as the wave levels begin to subside, there will still be unpredictably high sets of waves that will move through that are extremely dangerous.
Be Careful. Stay alive.
