Newport Police Officers were dispatched Sunday night to a motor vehicle versus bicycle crash on North Coast Highway 101, just north of the intersection with NW 25th Street. Newport resident Jeffrey Frazier, 24, was driving his 1999 Lexus 300 northbound on Highway 101. Just after passing through the intersection of NW 25th Street at Walmart, he collided with Eric Nash, 37, also of Newport, who was riding his bicycle east across Highway 101. Police say Frazier was not able to avoid striking Nash. Nash sustained serious injuries to his head and legs. He was transported to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital, and later airlifted to OHSU in Portland, Oregon. Nash was still listed in critical condition Monday morning.
The north- and south-bound lanes of Highway 101 from NW 25th Street to NW Oceanview Drive were closed for four hours. The Oregon Department of Transportation’s Incident Response Team assisted with closing the highway and providing traffic control.
Police are asking that anyone who saw the accident or know something substantial about it to call Newport Police Officer Tyson Haynes at 541-574-3348.
