This is exactly, if not precisely the way to NOT launch a boat in the Siuslaw River, or any body of water for that matter. Oregon State police report that a man set on having a relaxing day on the Siuslaw River just east of Florence had his whole day ruined, not to mention his truck, boat and trailer.
The driver told troopers that he backed his boat down onto the Cushman Roat Ramp off Highway 126. When he got it close enough to the water, he got out of his truck and started walking back to the boat to shove it the rest of the way into the river. Moments later the truck, boat and trailer started rolling down into the water, leaving the man standing on the ramp totally stunned.
Arriving state troopers called a tow truck which slowly pulled the truck back up the ramp; then later the boat and trailer. No word on why the rig went backwards into the drink. Identity of the driver was not immediately released.
