To formally announce the 75th Birthday Celebration of the Yaquina Bay Bridge, the bridge’s birthday committee has commissioned big banners to be attached to the bridge, high up off the pavement for motorists, coming and going, to be fully apprised. The sign is 4′ x 20′ and will announce the 75th Anniversary of the bridge’s construction. It will be installed beginning at 2am Friday morning, so as to not cause a traffic problem. Police volunteers will direct traffic through the one lane that will remain open during the sign installation. The sign will announce the big bridge birthday party coming up Sunday, October 2nd, from 12noon to 4pm, at the north end, on the green. It’ll be a big bridge walk and picnic, and everyone’s invited. And it’s all free.
The signs are the good work of Ken Spencer, owner of Newport Sign Company. He said he’ll be one of the sign hangers, strapped into a safety harness, 20 feet above the pavement. So come sun-up on Friday morning, everybody crossing the bridge will be thoroughly informed of the upcoming celebration on the 2nd.
