Faced with the financial realities of the city, Newport’s small cadre of paid firefighters have agreed with the city that no across-the-board salary increases are possible this year. However, when a firefighter reaches another step in his or her salary range, that step increase will be 3.5%. The city also agreed to pay any firefighter a one-time $600 check who is at the top step in their salary range and therefore “topped out. There’s only one. “The agreement also calls for the city to cover all increases in health insurance costs. The city also agrees to provide two new pairs of boots for the firefighters and a two percent pay boost for firefighters required to obtain and maintain Aircraft Rescue Certification, since they also respond to incidents at the Newport Airport.
The agreement closely mirrors the labor agreements approved earlier for Newport Police and Public Works union members. It has been the policy of the city to offer similar labor upgrades to city employees who are not union members.
