King Salvage pollution case finally ends with a conviction

King Salvage owner Lonetta Mobley and her manager have been found guilty of over 80 charges stemming from a long-running illegal salvage operation off Highway 20, three miles east of Newport. Judge Thomas Branford set sentencing for September 13th at 4pm in his courtroom at the Lincoln County Courthouse. Co-owner Robert Mobely was not considered of a sufficient mental state to meaningfully participate in the proceedings and so was not charged with a crime.

The case involves the running of what amounts to an illegal junk yard off Highway 20, whose oils, chemicals and other wastes are hazardous to local rivers and streams. Fires have broken out at the site in the past as flaming tires and waste oil sent clouds of toxic smoke into the air on more than one occasion. Efforts to get the Mobelys to clean it up proved unsuccessful and so Oregon State Police, with other state agencies, did some clean up themselves but eventually sought a legal solution, which they have received in court. But now comes the difficult part of trying to figure out how to clean up the rest of the mess. Some have considered it such a toxic mess that the cost of the clean up would exceed the value of the property and all of the Mobely family’s resources.
