Newport City Council will be circulating through “Water Issues” at the Treatment Plant and Upper Dam Monday Evening

On Monday, August 29th at 6 PM, the Newport City Council will be holding a town hall meeting at the City of Newport Water Treatment Plant followed by a tour of the Upper Dam. Notifications were sent to the NE Lakewood Drive neighborhood, homes along Big Creek Road, property owners along the reservoir, and homeowners in the Pacific Shores Beach Club.

The town hall meeting is to provide residents around the Big Creek reservoirs and Big Creek with information about the status of the Big Creek Dam Replacement Project, and to give a tour of the Upper Dam.

In addition, we will be announcing a meeting, particularly for property owners located in the inundation zone, to provide an update on emergency preparations relating to a catastrophic dam failure. This meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 26 at 5:15 PM at the Newport Fire Station. We will be providing notice to those property owners that would be potentially impacted by a dam failure. Any others that are interested in participating are welcome to attend.

Replacement of the Big Creek Dam is a significant endeavor that will require funding from federal, state, and local sources to accomplish the project. The Mayor, City Council and City administration have worked hard to secure additional funding to reduce the financial impact that this project will have on our local community. We appreciate the support from the State of Oregon to fund $14 million of design and permitting costs, and the current efforts underway in Washington to secure a significant amount of funding for this $80 million-plus project.

The public will have an opportunity to ask questions following the presentation at the water treatment plant and during our tour of the Upper Dam.
