CAMP ADAIR & SALEM HISTORY WITH JOHN BAKER
The Newport 60+ Activity Center is honored to welcome John Baker as a narrator and personal guide for a memorable journey through Camp Adair and other Willamette Valley points of historical interest on Tuesday, August 23, 2022. John is the author of Camp Adair and speaker on many other historical and personal topics. There will be visits to a variety of historic sites and John’s 80+ years of living in the Willamette Valley will provide personal reflections of an amazing history.
Camp Adair was a United States Army division training facility established north of Corvallis, operating from 1942 to 1946. During its peak period of use, the camp was home to approximately 40,000 people.
Camp Adair included about 1800 buildings, of which 500 were barracks, a hospital, a bakery, a post office, a bank, 13 post exchange stores, 5 movie theaters, and 11 chapels among other structures.
