Truman Capote LIVES!

Tru invites us in to the fascinating, funny and moving world of Truman Capote – live on stage – at the Newport Performing Arts Center
August 19 – 21
Directed by “Bones” actor Eric Millegan

Three performances will take place in the intimate David Ogden Stiers black box theatre at the PAC. Friday and Saturday night at 7pm, Sunday at 2pm.

He was the most celebrated American writer of his time. His most famous book, “In Cold Blood,” created a whole new form of literature – the non-fiction novel. He became the “life of the party” all around the world. No TV talk show was complete without Capote and his “weird little voice” and his wicked little zingers about everyone and everything! He was everywhere!

In 1966 he hosted the “Black and White Ball” at the Plaza Hotel in New York. It was the most glittering gathering of the rich and famous that NYC had ever seen. He held court nightly in the greatest and wildest disco of them all, “Studio 54.” He knew everybody’s story…and he was often himself right in the center of it..but then it all came crashing down!

The play Tru finds Capote in his New York City apartment on Christmas Eve, 1975. Esquire Magazine has just published a single chapter of an unfinished novel he has slaved over for 20 years. “Answered Prayers” was to be a “tell-all and then some more” about his rich and famous friends. But when the rich and powerful all read that first chapter, overnight Capote became as hated as he had once been loved! While wrapping Christmas presents and decorating the tree – and swilling vodka – Capote takes stock of his extraordinary life. It’s a cautionary tale that will have you laughing and crying at the same time.

Jay Presson Allen’s play debuted on Broadway in 1989…starring the great Robert Morse as Truman. Morse who won a Tony and a Drama Desk award for his performance. A bit later, he also won an Emmy for a version that aired on TV.

Tru is Truman Capote’s last great Christmas party and we are all invited!

Director Eric Millegan is best known as Zack Addy on the TV show “Bones.”  Other acting credits include the 2000 Broadway revival of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, singing the “Aquarius” solo in the Encores production of HAIR, and originating the role of Harold in the world premiere of HAROLD & MAUDE: THE MUSICAL opposite Academy Award winner Estelle Parsons. Eric recently directed THE FANTASTICKS and TRU at Anacortes Community Theatre in Washington.

Starring Charles Michel as Truman Capote

Charles Michel began acting back in the heyday of Dinner Theater in the 1970s. Along with directing and writing, he has made much of his living for over 40 years doing commercial voice overs. And he has coached hundreds, if not thousands, of other actors on how to do the same. Michel is very much looking forward to playing Truman Capote in the one man play Tru.
