Small Quilts Displayed at Newport Library
During July, the Newport Public Library is displaying 17 small quilts made by the Oregon Coastal Quilters Guild (OCQG). Library visitors are invited to view the quilts and vote for a favorite. After the library votes are counted, the person who made the “most-votes” quilt will be honored at the guild’s general meeting. Librarians have remarked that both library staff and patrons are enjoying the quilts.
After the display is taken down, the quilts will travel to the Newport Recreation Center, 225 Avery Street in Newport, where they and many more will be (silently) auctioned as part of the OCQG annual quilt show, “Quilts by the Sea,” August 5 and 6. Show hours are from 9-5 on Friday, August 5 and from 9-4 on Saturday, August 6. Half the proceeds from the silent auction will be donated to a local nonprofit organization. In addition, the person who made the auction quilt that received the most votes at the library will be able to designate an additional nonprofit to receive $50 from the guild.
This year’s “Quilts by the Sea” will feature about 250 quilts made by members throughout Lincoln, nearby counties, and beyond. The guild’s “Trees” challenge entries will be displayed. In addition, another special display will honor Jane Szabo of Waldport, the guild’s 2022 Featured Quilter.
Other quilt show activities will include several presentations of quilts to local veterans, a vendor mall, members’ boutique, displays of guild activities, a bed-turning organized by the Latimer Textile Center in Tillamook, and a children’s activity corner. Snacks and lunch selections will be offered by the 4-H Coastal Ranchers.
