An Intervenor Votes YES for Kaety Jacobson and Casey Miller
Because of my interest in Ballot Measure 21-203, voters have been asking me who I support for the two open positions on the Board of Commissioners.
My response: “Casey Miller for Position 1 and Incumbent Kaety Jacobson for Position 3.”
Then shock sets in. “How can you support Kaety? She spoke out against Ballot Measure 21-203 before the election?” The truth is that initially, I did not. I am a named Intervenor on behalf of 15neighborhoods in the lawsuits filed by 24 STR Investors challenging Measure 21-203. The STR Investors include 19 carpetbaggers who are not Lincoln County residents. The Intervenors represent the 10,080 YES voters on Ballot Measure 21-203.
As an Intervenor, I have a unique window into the litigation phase of this process. None of the Commissioners are as engaged as Kaety. None of the Commissioners is EVER as engaged as Kaety, yet they hold the veto power.
I listened with an open mind to Kaety’s responses to the many STR questions she was asked over the past month, including a 15neighborhoods’ Questionnaire. I concluded that Kaety is by far the best positioned to make the STR phase-out a reality by November 19, 2026. Our ultimate success requires her re-election.
Why? Because Kaety does not have to “come up to speed,” as would the other candidates. As the Incumbent, Kaety will not have to wait eight months until the candidates are sworn in to make critical litigation decisions. As the Incumbent, she is (1) entitled to be briefed by outside counsel, (2) required to approve the County’s budget (which includes the litigation budgets for the defense of BM 21-203, the licensing suspension, and STR Ordinance 523), and (3) expected to oversee and guide implementation decisions during these critical next few months.
As the Incumbent, Kaety felt the acute sting of a wildly successful Ballot Measure. She is the only one of the three who appears to have heard her constituents. Therefore, I trust her.
The candidates’ responses to 15neighborhoods’ questionnaire are on their website – 15neighborhoods.com with links to each Forum and the Yachats News Questionnaire. Kaety responded in English and Spanish.
Significantly, developer Mark Watkins did not respond. You may recall that two and now three complaints have been filed against Mr. Watkins alleging violations of Oregon’s campaign finance law. These are never trivial errors. Casey Miller was the only candidate for Position 1 who responded to the 15neighborhoods Questionnaire. That says it all.
Vote YES for Kaety Jacobson and Casey Miller.
Respectfully, Monica Kirk, Esq (ret)
