Oregon Coast Youth Symphony Festival!
Free Concerts Friday and Saturday in Newport
Six Oregon high school string orchestras will be descending upon Newport for
three days of live community youth symphony concerts, creative workshops, clinics to instill a drive for excellence and to inspire our Oregon classical music students to be musicians for a lifetime.
The Oregon Coast Youth Symphony Festival will take place in Newport this Friday and Saturday. Oregon high school orchestras plus the special guest Willamette University Chamber Orchestra are in Newport for three days of workshops, instructional sessions, mentoring and free public concerts featuring the all the orchestras. Besides the Willamette University Chamber Orchestra, the high schools attending include Tualatin, Newberg, Mountain View, North Medford, Ashland and Brookings-Harbor.
Friday at 7:00pm at the Newport Performing Arts Center will be the Festival’s opening concert featuring the Brookings-Harbor, North Medford and Mountain View high school orchestras followed by the Willamette University Chamber Orchestra of Salem..
The scene shifts to the Newport Middle School gymnasium Saturday night at 7:00pm with performances by the Ashland, Tualatin and Newberg high school orchestras. Then the grand finale will feature all six high school orchestra students coming together in a mass performance featuring the music of Michael Senturia and composer Soon Hee Newbold.
Music Directors and workshop leaders are Dr. Mark Laycock, Director of Orchestra and Music at Wichita State University and Cynthia Woods, Music Director of the Cambridge Symphony Orchestra of Cambridge, Massachusetts and faculty member at the New England Conservatory of Music.

The Oregon Coast Youth Symphony Festival is a unique event for our young high school classical music students from all over Oregon. This came out of a love for classical music and a passion for our youth to embrace it in their musical talent and hearts and has become one of the most original events in the West and indeed the entire country.
The Festival is endorsed by all seven major Oregon Symphony Orchestras including the Oregon Symphony, Eugene Symphony, Oregon East Symphony, Rogue Valley Symphony, Corvallis-OSU Symphony, Central Oregon Symphony and our own Newport Symphony Orchestra at the Ocean.
