Altrusa’s Project School Bell: 30 years of service to local Lincoln County students!
For the past 30 years, Altrusa of Yaquina Bay has supplied clothing and supplies to students in need. Altrusa is a dedicated group of local volunteers whose mission is to support the women and children of our area through literacy, social and health services. Altrusa volunteers raise funds through various events and write grants to support their work. As part of Altrusa’s service to the community, “Project School Bell” oversees the distribution of emergency clothing and supplies for needy school children. Health assistants at each school work closely with Project School Bell Committee members to identify student needs and procure supplies.
For the school year of 2021-22, half of the funding that was supplied to schools was provided by the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Charitable Fund. The other half came from Altrusa’s own fundraising efforts within our community. Schools that receive assistance from Project School Bell are public schools and HELP Centers (serving students with inadequate housing) in Newport, Waldport and Toledo as well as Eddyville and Siletz Valley Charter Schools.
The supplies that are purchased with funding from Project School Bell include: clothing, jackets, shoes, backpacks and hygiene supplies. With this support, the health office at each school, as well as the HELP Centers are able to assist individual students by providing items on an “as needed” basis. These supplies can make a huge difference to a child after an accident on the playground or when a student comes to school with inadequate clothing or hygiene. To access an adult in the school who can offer a way to clean up or provide a change of clothes can support student self-esteem, health, and safety.
