Court Appointed Special Advocates Newport, Oregon

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lincoln County, is pleased to announce that three new volunteers will be sworn in as officers of the court by Judge Amanda Benjamin, in a swearing-in ceremony on Thursday, April 7th.

The swearing-in ceremony will be the final step taken by these community members after 30 hours of training which covered topics like trauma, resiliency, poverty, mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence, cultural competency, and the role of the CASA volunteer.  Among the new volunteers taking the oath of office is Greg Holland, Waldport Mayor.

As Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs), these specially trained volunteers will be appointed to open Dependency & Neglect cases so that they may speak up for abused or neglected children.  CASA’s core mission is to ensure that each child’s best interest remains front and center during court proceedings. These volunteers will be a steady and trusted presence for children who, due to no fault of their own have been traumatized by abuse or neglect and must navigate the child welfare system.

CASA volunteers advocate for the best interest of children and give children a voice in the court and child welfare systems to make sure they are safe, well cared for and getting services needed. They also help to get the children placed in a permanent, safe, and nurturing home as quickly as possible by making recommendations to the court.

Currently there are dozens of children in the foster care system in Lincoln County, waiting for an Advocate.

CASA volunteers do not require any specific educational or professional background. All they need is compassion, objectivity, and a few hours a month to visit a child.  CASA volunteers come from all walks of life, and diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. They are ordinary individuals who rise to the extraordinary by making a difference in the life of a child.

Anyone interested in becoming a Court Appointed Special Advocate is asked to contact Missy Alberti-Araujo, Program Manager, at (541)265-3116 or Katie at (541)753-5838.

You can also go to  CASA-VFC.org to learn more about the program and fill out a volunteer application.

Thank you!
