Hundreds of Youth Strike and Rally for Climate Action

Climate change begins in home towns everywhere on planet Earth…

Hundreds of Eugene Youth Strike and Rally for Climate Action

High school and college students from across Eugene walked out of their classrooms to demand climate action and endorse climate champion Doyle Canning for Congress.

Eugene, OR – Today, youth from across Eugene walked out of class and marched to Washburne Park to demand that politicians take meaningful action on the climate crisis. At the rally, Sunrise Movement Eugene and Sunrise Movement Corvallis announced their joint endorsement for Doyle Canning, the progressive Democrat running to represent Oregon’s newly drawn and increasingly progressive Fourth District in Congress.

Doyle Canning, Vice-Chair of the Democratic Party of Oregon’s Environmental Caucus, said:  “It is very simple: Our kids deserve to have a future. Young people deserve a champion in Congress who will bring the sense of urgency that comes from fleeing a raging wildfire, from watching entire Oregon towns burn to the ground, from the 100 deaths in last summer’s heat dome. Year after year the pollution just goes up and up and up, and politics as usual continues to fail us. I’m running for Congress because our climate can’t wait.”

Kyle Purdy, the political lead with Sunrise Eugene, said:  “After a thorough endorsement process in which we interviewed many of the candidates that responded to our questionnaire, Sunrise Eugene and Corvallis members unanimously voted to support Doyle Canning. Reading through the in-depth responses that candidates offered, and asking them questions directly, it was clear that Canning was the strongest on issues of climate justice and the best suited to represent our district.”

Carly Werdel, an organizer with Sunrise Corvallis, said:  “Sunrise Corvallis is thrilled to endorse Doyle Canning for Congress. Oregon needs someone in DC who’s committed to climate justice and a Green New Deal, and we know that Doyle is fit for the job.”

Aeron Lerch, an organizer with Sunrise Eugene, said:  “Sunrise Eugene is proud to endorse Doyle Canning for Congress. As our skies are filled with smoke every summer, and record heat waves kill the most vulnerable in our community, our generation knows that we can no longer afford business as usual in Washington – we need a leader who will fight for our climate and for our future. Doyle Canning has proven herself to be that leader.”

Young people from across the city rallied at the park, listening to speeches from student speakers and from Canning calling for immediate action to reduce emissions and force a just transition from fossil fuels at all levels of government. Speakers highlighted the recent victory against the proposed Jordan Cove LNG pipeline and export terminal as an example of the huge impact that collective action can have for climate justice. They also highlighted the recent victories of the Fossil Free Eugene campaign in which the Eugene City Council passed two motions last fall putting the City on track to lead the state on municipal climate policy. This campaign has been spearheaded by Sunrise Eugene in partnership with the NAACP Eugene-Springfield and the Springfield Eugene Tenants association.

The action was hosted by Sunrise Eugene, a local youth led climate organization fighting for a Green New Deal, good jobs and a liveable future along with 4J Climate Justice Team, a coalition of high school climate clubs.
