Newport hooks up with Oregon Dept. of Forestry to Jointly Prevent Urban and Wildland Fires

ODF and NFD will work more closely together for mutual aid.

The City of Newport and the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) made it official this week.  Both entities agreed to combine both fire agencies to better protect Newport as well as coastal forestry and other wildlands.  The Department of Forestry and the city of Newport agreed to a partner together on both sides of the boundary lines involving Newport and the ODF.

As good of an idea to enhance firefighting in the area, neither side agreed to a formal joint firefighting contract – rather, just joint-responding when feasible. Both Forestry and Newport agreed through a Memorandum of Understanding that the two entities will use and expand a facility already at Highway 101 and Northeast 73rd.  Both departments will be appreciating such a blending of two fire agencies – both independent, but exercising mutual aid when possible.

The next step is for the two fire operations to get busy expanding the existing fire station right off Highway 101.
