Virtual gallery tour- Facebook@LincolnCityCulture, Saturday Nov. 13 Painter/ anthropologist, John Oberdorf has created a magnificent body of oil paintings that dabble in the surreal while telling stories of days gone by, places that people have touched and are now being reclaimed by nature and landscapes that are deeply rooted in memory.
This exhibition will present a survey of paintings exploring inner journey and “landscapes” of the mind. John Oberdorf, surrealist at heart, approaches painting to produce a visual response in the viewer that simultaneously evoke a past, present and future sense of history. Through his work, he asks questions and provide windows into other worlds. Worlds of the possible, the unusual. He delves into more distorted dream imagery at times but feels that the surreal experience can be closer to our day to day worlds…if we only allow ourselves to see.
Oberdorf’s work elaborates “worlds of the possible” – to quote the artist’s own words –elaboration of autonomous iconographies, exploring the ambiguity of natural shapes and the mystery of cultural traces in order to stimulate the viewer’s curiosity. In these newly conceived images, elements such as rocks, vessels and pictographs symbolically evoke the ceaseless, unpredictable dialogue between Nature and History, Time, Loss and Memory.
John Oberdorf is a graduate of Oregon State University with a degree in Art and Anthropology minor. In addition to creating paintings and drawings over his prolific career, Oberdorf has illustrated for various science fiction and youth publications. His work has been exhibited in galleries throughout Arizona, California and Oregon and is in numerous collections from New York to Los Angeles and was featured in numerous publications, including Art News.
