PLEASE VOTE. YES ON 21-203
I’m asking you to please join me in voting YES on ballot measure 21-203 to STOP short-term rentals in Lincoln County. Our Oregon Family has lived here in Lincoln County for almost 100 years; my mother grew up here, my grandparents owned and operated an oceanfront business here. A homeowner in SW Portland, I sold my home to move here 11 years ago and have only found stable housing here the first 5 years.
Outside of my own little rented cabin (under 500 sq ft) I had in Nye Beach being turned into a vacation rental VRBO, saying it sleeps 6? and brings in now $4,000 a month instead of under $1,000, which displaced me homeless 40 days to the campground after already looking for housing for 3 months, which also closed my business as I only found what was to be ‘temporary’ housing in Seal Rock, which financially devastated me, getting stuck there for three years, away from my community and business due to no housing or storage available.
This resulted in causing incredible debt, when I had none, living transiently, and has cost me far more than just simply having a home. When one storage unit finally became available, I took it, and because there was still no housing available anywhere, I had to buy a trailer to live in, living in my car, still looking for a safe place to even park my tiny home trailer. I then became a “Park Host” for housing in the area, giving them 30+ hours a week in labor for the exchange. During the height of the pandemic, we had to vacate. I had NO CHOICE but to live up in the “woods” for 16 weeks with no electricity or facilities until I found a driveway to rent north of Depoe Bay.
I was at County Commissioner Hall’s office and Newport City since early 2013~ Less than 6 months after they opened the floodgates to allowing VRBO’s to our County, telling them, there is a huge issue with too many vacation rentals and no housing for local citizens. I also have spoken at length with Commissioner Jacobson on this issue.
These “mini-motel owners” do not support or invest in our community; nor do they join us in having or offering local sustainable living. They do however, reap huge profits and take their money OUT OF OUR AREA. These “tourists” causing excessive traffic, do not abide traffic laws, speed through town and go too dangerously slow on HWY 101, as well, place strain on our roads, bridges and utilities. They leave outrageous excessive amounts of overflowing garbage in every trash can all over town and on our beaches.
…What happened to leave NO trace ?
The excess wear and tear on our roads between Beverly Beach and Depoe Bay and on our bridges with increased tourist traffic, plus the excess garbage, VRBO noise, cars, light pollution and abnormal use of sewer/water on properties is a sad tragedy. This unforgivable loss of affordable housing to locals, having to live transient due to NO Housing, not being able to get or keep quality Doctors or Teacher’s here, its all wrong and must be reversed. The County has had plenty of ‘warning’ to provide a ‘correction’ or manage those vacation owners and management companies and still continued to issue licenses, knowing this is a huge problem in ALL of Lincoln County.
I recently interviewed some VRBO owners. The advertising was for a housekeeper for $15 per hour, and like many companies, they wanted to pay by the ‘job’, not hourly, to pay “LESS” for the job, while boasting making over $70,000 so far this year alone in less than 5 months of renting. The wage for the job is not even a ‘living’ wage. The other owner claimed they ’employ’ people and ‘create jobs’ here by having a VRBO in Gleneden Beach. Gee, if they lived here in that home as a contributing member of the community, they most likely would do their your own gardening and housekeeping.
Our Oregon Coast is protected by Law, to be enjoyed as it always was meant to be. PRESERVATION. CONSERVATION. EDUCATION. RECREATION. We already had ample lodging for people to stay in Hotels, Motels, Campgrounds, RV & KOA Parks, Lodges, and even Bed & Breakfast Homes. We did not need these “mini-motels” in all of our ‘residential’ family neighborhoods. There has been no housing here in Lincoln County now for “8” years due to excessive vacation rental licenses being issued, leaving many Oregonians with no housing. Our small essential businesses are not dependent on tourists, we don’t see that money, but the City and County sure does as do the OUT THE STATE lodging businesses like Meredith Lodging pouring over $300,000+ to fight this local ballot measure. Hmmm…
Perhaps if Lincoln County and City of Newport listened to the residents of our County and hadn’t issued too many VRBO vacation licenses, or actually regulated them, we would not have ever reached this critical ballot issue. Our Oregon Coast has been over-sold out to OUT OF STATE Vacation interests and this has severely compromised our local daily living here in Lincoln County in so many adverse ways. Please join me in voting YES to returning to a sustainable livable community here at our Coast, saying YES to local business, saying YES to quality teachers and doctors staying in our area because they can obtain housing, and finally, saying YES so all the ‘locals’ who had to move away from this community, all these ESSENTIAL workers who serve YOU at our local grocery stores, gas stations, medical offices, our Park Rangers, and many locals, like myself, can move home again where they work, instead of the extra expense of driving in from the Valley or outer-lying areas.
This native Oregonian “thanks you” for voting for OREGON.
